Jill Scott was born on April 4 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Scott was raised an only daughter of her grandmother. Scott was a student at her school at the Philadelphia High School for Girls, and then Temple University after graduating. In addition to working two jobs part-time, she took classes in secondary teaching at Temple University. She hoped to be the high school's English teacher. The dream however was put on hold when after 3 years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of the college. Her first job was as a spoken word artist performing her own pieces in live poetry readings. She ultimately joined with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. You Got Me, their joint song, was written by them. The singer performed at a Roots concert. Afterward she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. Also, she was a performer in her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical Rent. She was hired to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
